Becoming the Picture of Health

Unfortunately, our visual society has misled us to believe that a person’s health can be determined by a quick glance.  Intellectually, you know that’s not true.  But, does your life reflect the belief that if I’m looking good on the outside, things must be running smoothly on the inside?

Consider what you can do to be the picture of health.

Your body is constantly healing itself.   It wants to move toward being “well”.  The way we live determines whether we are helping our body heal and be “well” or whether we are slowing down the process by asking our body to heal itself from our self-inflicted damage.

Processed foods, smoking, stress, and inactivity all slow down the healing process.  Anytime you put a foreign (or toxic) substance in your body (think of anything that you inhale, eat, or drink that is not found in nature), your body spends energy cleansing (healing) itself from that substance, instead of healing itself from the normal stresses of life.

Similarly, stress initiates a cascade of reactions that our body must deal with, which distracts the body from the normal healing process.

Life in today’s world lends itself to away from the healing process and being the picture of health.  However, there are many ways for you to help the healing process along.  Consider adding one of these suggestions to your life and don’t get discouraged if you aren’t ready to change a certain area.

Remember, small change leads to lasting change.

To help your body heal:

  • Exercise.  Research shows that exercising older adults heal from scraps faster than their chronically sitting friends.  If that’s what’s happening on the inside, think of the awesome things that are happening on the inside.

  •  Eat, drink, and inhale nature.  Swear off (or at least cut down on) processed foods, artificial ingredients in foods and drinks, inhaling or consuming foreign substances or chemicals.  I love this quote:  If it comes from a plant, it is good for you, if it is manufactured in a plant, stay away.” –Darrin Steen http://www.fatlosslifestyle.com
  • Cut your stress.  Yes, easier said than done.  To cut stress, don’t start looking at what you can cut out of your life.  Rather, take a good, honest look at the effects stress has on your life.  Once you notice that de-stressing your life can actually improve other areas of your life that are dear to you, you may be more motivated to change things around.  Here are a few questions to get you started on this inquiry:
    • When’s the last time you spent 10 minutes of quality, relaxed time with your spouse/kids/dog or doing your favorite hobby?
    •  Are you experiencing symptoms of stress affecting your physical health: heart palpitations, increase blood pressure or insomnia, to name a few?

Remember that although a good part of your health is determined by the donation from your parents, you are in the driver’s seat now  and responsible for your journey to the picture of health.
